Given that the IB Learner Profile is our goal, what kind of instructional practice will it take to ensure that every students reaches this goal in Arts?
Choose three profiles (two that are obvious and one that is a stretch) and for each...
List examples from your classrooms below:
Communicators
Risk-Takers
Reflective
Art is by nature a form of communication. Art communicates beauty, emotion and ideas. It can communicate symbolically a social, cultural and/or political statement.
Artists should strive to be risk-takers. To create is to risk. To risk is to challenge the status quo, experiment and culminate in uniqueness.
Reflection; the ablility to analyze one's creation and recognize it's strengths and weaknesses is crucial to learning. Collaboration November 5th
Please brainstorm ways to introduce the IB Learner Profile in your classes and list your ideas below:
How could you teach students about these words in a meaningful way?
To help students to learn the vocabulary of the IB learner profile I have posted them in a visible location and plan to discuss them whenever the opportunity arises. -Wow! Great progress! I can see how the LP readily applies to art.
How could you facilitate connections between the Learner Profile and Art curriculum?
The process of learning art draws upon several of the characteristics of the IB Learner Profile by nature. Creating a connection between the art curriculum and the IB profile is a matter of presentation. The teacher needs to help the students relate by referring to the profile when discussing the art component. To use risk-taking as an example; the process of creating and striving toward originality requires an individual to stretch the envelope, to pursue a course not previously considered, etc. When encouraging creativity in an art project the teacher needs to make reference to the IB profile and relate how striving for creativity is also risk taking. - You might also consider linking (or having the students make the links between) artists with the LP characteristics (e.g., any of the Impressionists with risk-takers, etc.)
Do you have any specific lesson plans you could use (or have used) to create a classroom culture that fosters the qualities of the IB Learner?
Perhaps some of the qualities but all of the qualities of the IB learner, no. - Ok, good start. There are some really great ideas in other groups' workspaces. Take a look; maybe they'll give you ideas for things you could change a bit for your own classes. Let me know how I can help.
Please see the IB Learner Profile folder in the Y drive (Teachers/All) to access Learner Profile materials for your classroom, hallway, etc.
