Given that the IB Learner Profile is our goal, what kind of instructional practice will it take to ensure that every students reaches this goal in Language B?
Choose three profiles (two that are obvious and one that is a stretch) and for each...
List examples from your classrooms below:
Communicators:
organize around communicative themes which are interesting and relevant to students
building language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) from basic to complex
provide and model explicit behaviors for successful communication and interaction
create maximum time for students to communicate in the target language
encourage respectful communication behaviors.
Risk-takers:
allowing students to experience the new language in a supportive enironment
explicitly teaching tolerance within a safe environment
scaffolding and group support to encourage risk-taking
Inquirers:
exploring other cultures (multiculturalism)
building language skills to a level where students can extrapolate information from a source presented purely in the target language (L2)
creating a desire to experience the L2 in a real-life situation (ex: travel, skype)

Please brainstorm ways to introduce the IB Learner Profile in your classes and list your ideas below:
How could you teach students about these words in a meaningful way?
· As this group is largely untrained we wanted sites to go to to use curriculum ideas from master IB teachers.
I would recommend accessing the IB's Online Curriculum Center. I can give you the User Name etc. (I'd prefer not to post it in a public setting.)Post the Profile words in two languages. Refer to with content.
· Role play ideas with the profiles. · Trying to form their identities with these profiles. Great ideas! There's so much you can do with the LP in different languages.
How could you facilitate connections between the Learner Profile and Language B curriculum?
· Amy shared her use of the learner profile words project in English/Spanish & French. Located on the y drive. · Explicitly teach the profile words with the balance of content. · Matching words with the definitions
Integrate profile vocabulary and identities into lesson plans.
· Create posters in two languages around learner profile themes connecting content.
Do you have any specific lesson plans you could use (or have used) to create a classroom culture that fosters the qualities of the IB Learner?
Nice work so far!
Please see the IB Learner Profile folder in the Y drive (Teachers/All) to access Learner Profile materials for your classroom, hallway, etc.
