IB Learners strive to be:

  • Inquirers

  • Knowledgeable

  • Thinkers

  • Communicators

  • Principled

  • Open-minded

  • Caring

  • Risk-takers

  • Balanced

  • Reflective

Given that the IB Learner Profile is our goal, what kind of instructional practice will it take to ensure that every students reaches this goal in Mathematics?

Choose three profiles (two that are obvious and one that is a stretch) and for each...
List examples from your classrooms below:

  • risk-taker
    • working in small groups or with partners to solve problems
    • knowing when to ask for help (from adults and peers)

  • communicator
    • presenting solutions in front of class
    • showing work and explaining ideas

  • reflective
    • checking for accuracy
    • does my answer make sense?
    • understanding tools and strategies for successful learning

Collaboration November 5th

Please brainstorm ways to introduce the IB Learner Profile in your classes and list your ideas below:
  • How could you teach students about these words in a meaningful way?
  • Posting words in class and referring to the words often
    • caring-food drive participation, recognizing acts of kindness from students - and maybe if math comes easily to you, not making fun of someone if they get the wrong answer?
    • risk-takers-using the word risk-taker when calling on students to share work or particpate in class
    • reflective- after assessments students explain why they thought they missed problems-careless mistakes, computation errors, hurried through, didn't understand; have students rate questions: cluelss, maybe, for sure, ask students, "does your answer make sense?"
    • inquirer-asking good questions (MTI) model approaches to problem-solving, metacognition
    • communicator-students showing their thinking and explaining their work,
    • thinker-"1 minute (30 second) think tank, mental math
    • knowledgeable- fluency, basic facts, math skills
    • balanced-encourage students to find their strengths in math; looking for math outside of classroom
    • open-minded- using multiple strategies
    • principled-when correcting papers, being honest, persevring, giving your best effort, learning for understanding - Great connections between LP and Math
  • How could you facilitate connections between the Learner Profile and Math curriculum?
    • Take pictures of our students demonstrating these words and using these as examples

    • Exit pass- have students explain which ib learner profile fits their learning style for the day LOVE IT!

  • Do you have any specific lesson plans you could use (or have used) to create a classroom culture that fosters the qualities of the IB Learner?
    • IB profile learner vocabulary and defintions on separate cards. Pass out cards. Students match up cards
    • Pairs of students come up with symbols for the vocabulary
    • Create public service announcments about Math in the Real World Really nice work! Great ideas! Good luck!

  • Please see the IB Learner Profile folder in the Y drive (Teachers/All) to access Learner Profile materials for your classroom, hallway, etc.
