Given that the IB Learner Profile is our goal, what kind of instructional practice will it take to ensure that every student reaches this goal in Technology?
Choose four profiles (three that are obvious and one that is a stretch) and for each...
List examples from your classrooms below:
Communicators - Social Networking, blogging, wikis, video production, digital communication.
Inquirer - Conduct research and show independence and enjoyment in learning
Principled Act with integrity and honesty with s6. Acknowledge intellectual property. Safety.
Caring (Stretch) - maybe caring for the equipment What about lessons that incorporate empathy for other around the world? That could be seen as caring....Just thinking. -Cheers, Kat
Collaboration November 5th Please brainstorm ways to introduce the IB Learner Profile in your classes and list your ideas below:
How could you teach students about these words in a meaningful way?
Orientations - for computer labs and library - focus on learner profile as a way to teach procedures and rules (eg. ask students to brainstorm ways to show they are principled by their behavior in the library) Could focus on a 'profile of the day (or week)' so as you welcome the students into the lab, classroom, library you tell them you will focus on a specific profile that day and then at the end of the lesson or time together, you and the students reflect on who showed that profile and in what way? Business sized cards (maybe tattoos! or stickers instead) that have Learner Profile quality on them. Give out to students as they portray the various qualities. Later have a recognition for those who collect the most. After teaching the LP profiles, have students create skits and present them. Could record them digitally.
How could you facilitate connections between the Learner Profile and Technology curriculum?
Start this by using the learner profile terminology in the lessons we already teach. There is potential for all learner profile elements within the Computer Skills and Engineering Technology Curricula. Posters in the labs and the library - Al will provide.
Do you have any specific lesson plans you could use (or have used) to create a classroom culture that fosters the qualities of the IB Learner?
Big 6 and research lessons connect directly with the following learner profiles: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, and reflective. Al and Jeremy have many lessons that foster these qualities.
I love these ideas! Nice work! Great ways of integrating the subject area with the LP. I hope we can make the tatoos work! - Jane
Please see the IB Learner Profile folder in the Y drive (Teachers/All) to access Learner Profile materials for your classroom, hallway, etc.
